This form of therapy is experiential in that clients learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, in the arena with the facilitators, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviours, and patterns that took place during that time. The EAGALA modality is practised on the ground; we do not ride the horses. The focus of a session is the setting up of activities for the client, which involve the horses and which will require the client to apply certain skills. It also provides an innovative solution that provides a unique space for an emotionally safe, hands-on experience for clients. With real-time feedback, clients are able to reach issues where traditional talk-based therapies leave off. The Model requires a licensed, credentialed Mental Health Professional and a qualified Equine Specialist who structure sessions incorporating horses to effectively address the client’s treatment plan or learning goals. These sessions help with issues such as addiction, domestic abuse, behavioural disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma.
